It is not strictly accurate to say that the world is overpopulated, in reality the problem is that the world's population is not evenly distributed. Italy, for example, has a very serious problem with declining birth rates and this in turn will create a serious imbalance within the next two decades as the 'baby-boomers' begin to retire. Western societies need children in order that there is a workforce which is capable of earning money, paying taxes, and thereby funding the pension funds of retirees. A civilised society encourages children rather than views them as a nuisance.
