Sicily: How to do it without throwing up by Mona Farrugia
Now is the time to dash off to Sicily for a brilliant runaround in a nice car on their nice roads, eating their nice food. Mona Farrugia hops into hers and, throwing up aside, indulges in days of eating and driving.
Every time I go to Sicily I am reminded how utterly stunning it is. I always wonder how, along the years, our embedded image of Sicily remains that of scrambling for the plane, scrambling at the market in Catania to buy crap, scrambling for toothpaste and scrambling for cheap chocolate. Then the images that come later: ‘giving’ a box out of 5 to the men in uniform so that they don’t notice our suitcases have diabetes.
In other words we have managed, through our desperation, to give Sicily the image of something worse than a souk. At least souks have souls. Yet it is not: it is verdant, lush, full of good food, good scenery and wonderfully happy, food-loving people.
Even at the height of summer, with temperatures so soaring that on one occasion, myself and a business partner literally sweated buckets all through lunch much to the quasi-embarrassment of both (try wiping your neck and hair with your napkin and having to squeeze it to see what this is like), the island is still coated in a rich, lush green. How on earth does our neighbor do this while Malta burns and turns to a dull ochre?
Sicily is brilliant because it is so easily accessible. With flight prices reaching a ridiculous €200 on both Air Malta (Catania) and Ryanair (Trapani) we decided to make an experience of it and took the car on the catamaran for a runaround buzz on their brilliant roads, most of which have been resurfaced over the past two years thanks to loads of nice EU dosh.
The Tuesday trip on Virtu’s Jean de la Vallette catamaran leaves at the horrendous hour of 5am. It is very obviously a trucker’s trip and we are not truckers. Waking up at 3.30 felt like being hit repeatedly on the head and then being mowed over with a steam roller for good measure. Moreover, once you’re there, there’s no sleeping so you really do need to schedule a nap in the afternoon when you may be on the verge of, well, passing out.
Catamaran prices are so business-led (business for Virtu’ not business for you) you really need to plan well. All year, they are cheap(ish). In July and September, prices for both humans and cars shoot up. Unlike flying, the longer you stay, the higher the cost of the trip. I can never understand this, with my reasoning being ‘x’jidhlilhom u johorgilhom kemm ha ndumu?’ If you are foreign and cannot understand this, then, good. In August the rates are eye-watering, the highest year-round.
What really cheeses me off is that throughout the year, Virtu’ do these family packages which you can only benefit from if you go with children. In fact, children under 14 travel free. Is a 13-year old a child? Why is that? Do they not occupy a whole seat too? Why should childless couples and singles be castigated, or even subsidise others, for not over-populating the world and spending money on a nice little break? Is a family 2 heterosexual parents and offspring? I thought we were living in 2011.
This child thing on the Virtu ferries gets my goat a little. I love Virtu’s service, the ‘new’ catamaran is a huge improvement on the Maria Dolores (also called, between us sufferers and thrower-uppers ‘Maria X’Dulur’), it makes the actual trip, and not just the destination, really enjoyable (unless, of course, you get strong winds, in which case the tipping over of the boat will freak you out completely and you will still throw up).
I especially adore the fact that for just €15 each way, you can buy an upgrade to Club Class (which does not get you a single coffee: it has to be the stingiest Club Class I have ever seen – they used to give out peanuts, water and juice but now you have to sit at the bar to get those) and peace and quiet away from the hoi polloi downstairs. In fact, on the way up, there was just a couple on the other side and when The Writer came to meet me it was just him (whoo!) occupying the entire space. You also get a big, fat ‘Club Class’ emblazoned on your windscreen so you have your own little parking space downstairs which gets you in and out quickly and with priority.
All good, all very lovely, except for when the people buying the Club Class tickets are the very same who are benefitting from the ‘children go free’ shebang. On our way back from Sicily we had 2 extended families with 5 sprogs who not only went absolutely haywire running here and there, shouting (in English of course: those who shout in Maltese are the hamalli downstairs, those who do it in English are…erm hamalli too, just a floor higher up) in a most uncontrollable manner. The grandma, at some point, did try to quieten them down. But the parents didn’t. It was only after an entire hour of this madness (we were returning from Catania, which is, at best, a three hour journey) that they stopped, and then only because it got choppy, some children went to sleep and another started to throw up.
Virtu’ need to sort this one out and introduce a separate section in Club for children and their parents. On airlines, especially in long haul Business and First, it is normal for check-in staff to separate those who want to have a  snooze, a quiet chat, time for reading and those who frankly haven’t had a quiet bath in three years. Club Class is mostly about peace and quiet and adults. It is also about adults trying to get away from their, and other people’s, children.
Rant over, the ‘new’ boat is smooth and extremely comfortable. The films they show are very acceptable, the food the usual awful ‘sandwiches in plastic triangles’, especially considering they can be picking it up regularly from this land of bounty.

- Check the Virtu Ferries website regularly but basically rates are very low in winter (when the sea can be very rough), medium to high in July and September, stratospheric in August. There is, on the other hand, no guarantee that the sea is smooth in August and they will not refund if you leave your stomach somewhere between the two islands. They will, though, change your ticket and return date if you call them, which is quite nice of them.
- Tuesday morning the catamaran leaves at the ungodly hour of 5am. If the sea is smooth you arrive an hour and a half later, at 6.30am. There is not a single cafeteria open in Pozzallo at that time but this place close to Frigintini serves the truckers and workmen of the area so it will be. You cannot walk it though so this is only applicable if you go by car.
- The roads are mostly smooth and wonderful: if you have recently bought a lovely car, maybe a roadster or cabrio, this is the place to enjoy it. I guess I should mention that they drive on the other side of the road. Remember to update your TomTom software as, at the best of times, Italian directions tend to throw you off cliffs and drive you beneath roads.
- For Mercedes [and other marques’] owners: parts are the same price but they are available and nothing is on a waitlist. There are very good agents and their mechanics are awesome. Ours in Malta quoted an entire set-change to fix a screw (cost €260, not including labour); the one in Catania did it for free labour, in 7 minutes and 60c for the part. Cars, on the other hand, are still ridiculously expensive, the same price as Malta and higher than the UK. Remember that some parts (including wipers) will be for left-hand drive.
- On Saturdays, the Catamaran comes back from Catania (not Pozzallo) and takes 3-hours at best case scenario. You can combine going up to Pozzallo and coming down from Catania but if your sea legs are not so strong then the 3-hour trip (mostly longer if the sea is choppy, although not the previous 6-hour extra of the Maria X’Dulur) can be upsetting so you may like to return on another day. Of course the other day can have Force 7 gale winds blowing. The risk is always there.

A great article Mona with the exception of your 'personal' views concerning child fares on the catamaran. It is not strictly accurate to say that the world is overpopulated, in reality the problem is that the world's population is not evenly distributed. Italy, for example, has a very serious problem with declining birth rates and this in turn will create a serious imbalance within the next two decades as the 'baby-boomers' begin to retire.
Western societies need children in order that there is a workforce which is capable of earning money, paying taxes, and thereby funding the pension funds of retirees.
A civilised society encourages children rather than views them as a nuisance.
Our son is able to travel on London Underground and Buses all day for £1 so I am heartened to see that Malta still has one eye on the future !
