Paradise Found

Sicily: please give us your opinion!

Mona Farrugia and her gastronomy mates would love your opinion on everything Southern Sicilian.

Sicily: please give us your opinion!

I used to think we were lucky enough to have a sister island to escape to. These days, I don’t any more. Gozo has become overpriced, the quality of accommodation less than exciting, the food not interesting enough to travel (and spend too much money on) for.

We are, on the other hand, lucky enough to have Sicily. With the catamaran taking one and a half hours to arrive in Pozzallo that is, for me and those who live in the south of the island, quicker than going to Gozo. It takes me ten minutes to drive to Valletta and an hour to drive to Cirkewwa.

That is why, when the foodie and chef group I associate with (also called the University Gastronomy course) wanted to go somewhere good to eat, it took us around five minutes to decide to go to Sicily.

This is the bit where I ask for your help. Could you all give us any personal experiences and information that will help us get the most out of this trip? I promise to share after.

1.     What is your favourite restaurant, and why?

2.     Which is your favourite Michelin-starred restaurant and why?

3.     Which town do you normally head to? Ragusa Ibla, Sciacca…?

4.     Who makes the best cannoli and cassatella?

5.     Do you have a decent van driver who can drive us around the island without fleecing us?

6.     Is there a good food market which is open on a Monday morning?

7.     What is your favourite Sicilian breakfast?

8.     Is there a decent Agriturismo which is worth the trip? By 'worth the trip' we mean ‘manages to combine good agriculture with excellent food’.

May I suggest staying in the area of Modica... it's truly a lovely picturesque town with plenty of pasticcerie and restaurants in the centre... (without being touristy) while there do try the restaurant Torre d'Oriente (http://www.torredoriente.com/) - I've been around two years ago & still dream of returning...

If you're after a Michelin Starred restaurant try Ristorante Duomo (http://www.ristoranteduomo.it/) in Ibla... when I was there I hadn't managed to get a table since I had no booking, but I'll surely visit next time round!!

Mona's reply

Fantastic Stephanie thank you. The only problem is that we're only going for one day, just to eat (and eat and eat) and it's a Monday...Duomo is sadly closed

1. What is your favourite restaurant, and why?
La Dispensa dell'Etna - Castiglione di Sicilia - http://www.ladispensadelletna.eu/ - cosy, tiny medieval restaurant serving home-made typical Sicilian food from the Etna region. They also have a large selection of Sicilian products for sale.

2. Which is your favourite Michelin-starred restaurant and why?

http://locandadonserafino.it/329/lido-azzurro-restaurant - excellent fish dishes - particular recipes & combinations - location is just next to the sea.

3. Which town do you normally head to? Ragusa Ibla, Sciacca…?
Travelled through most of Sicily favourite area: coast from Acitrezza to Taormina - favourite town Erice (Trapani)

4. Who makes the best cannoli and cassatella?
Pasticceria Spinella, Catania

7. What is your favourite Sicilian breakfast?
brioche e granita - Caffe dell'Arte, Corso Umberto, Modica

8. Is there a decent Agriturismo which is worth the trip? By 'worth the trip' we mean ‘manages to combine good agriculture with excellent food’.
http://www.officinagastronomica.com/resort/ - resort rather than agriturismo

www.arrigo.it - azienda agrituristica arrigo di Linguaglossa - very nice place - excellent surroundings - the breakfast with typical products produced by them

Mona's reply

Amazing...thank you so much.
Unfortunately we're only there for one day. And it's a Monday so it seems as if most restaurants are closed! :/

Mon, if you're heading towards the Messina area try the granita al caffe topped with whipped fresh cream for breakfast.

Beware of tourist traps in the Etna area at the Aci towns... Out of Castello, Reale and Trezza probably Aci Trezza would be the best for fish.

If you're looking for an Agriturismo in Cefalu - www.casalebazan.it

I've never been to the North-Western side but I hear very good things about Palermo. Apparently the 'Sette Veli' at Pasticceria Cappello close to the Cathedral is to die for, as are the food stalls at the Mercato della Vucciria.

Enjoy :)
