You would think that by the time you are in your fifties, you would have stopped living in tents and sourcing hostels and beach huts when you go off on holiday, but Joe Schembri has not. He has no intention of stopping any time soon either.

Joe works for Air Malta, is married to Josephine and has three children: formula for early-onset accountantism, you may think. Yet he credits his place of work with giving him a wonderful opportunity to travel at discounted rates with different airlines, allowing him to literally see the world.

He’s a backpacker with 98 different countries visited and 1300 dives notched under his bum bag. Living with the local population is what he leaves the country to do: no mere tourist is he. He delves into archeological sites and has shaken hands, nudged noses and touched foreheads with myriad ethnic tribes around the world. One cannot imagine Joe joining a tour group: obviously he makes all his own arrangements only buying guided tours to visit remote areas.

Joe answers planetmona reader questions on anything connected to far-flung, adventurous, low-cost  travel here
