A fabulous vacancy: We are looking for a Café Factotum
In the series of 'jobs I'd love to do but which are not available in Malta' we say they are: read, read again...and write in
Â
Do the following sentences set your teeth on edge?
Â
- Mhux bicca waiter ghandek bzonn?
- Just put it in a microwave
- How difficult can it be to make an espresso?
Â
Curious? You should be
Â
When we go out to eat or simply to have a break during the day at our favourite cafeteria, what makes us return, over and over? What makes these places the only places we like to go to?
Â
It is a combination of really good quality food that we love to eat, a comfortable and stylish ambience and service so excellent you never have to even think about it.
Â
We are looking for one person who really believes this, who wants to give the kind of food and service they would want to get, someone who is very hard-working and passionate for the food and hospitality industry, someone who has been to Paris and London and thought ‘Why can’t we have this level in Malta?’
Â
You will know the difference between white sliced bread and a real ftira, love food and love watching people enjoy it, the difference between dishwater and a good cappuccino and will have no social issues: you can interact with Maltese from all walks of life, have enough linguistic skills to service non-Maltese (and get them talking when they return) and enough discretion to handle anybody from a couple of ladies gossiping about their husbands to lawyers wheeling and dealing.
Â
Ideally you would also have an artistic bent: in the kitchen you prefer to make sweets because they need precision and focus. You also love to dabble with crafts, painting, pottery or anything that makes this life just a little bit nicer.
Â
Moreover the following will put you at a huge advantage:
- Having worked as a PA
- Recently finished your Advanced levels
- Recently graduated from the ITS and already sucked up in some huge hotel’s kitchen (and not really enjoying it at all)
- A love of food blogging, recipe writing, reading, researching about food, eating out and going to the farmer’s market
Â
This is a full-time position and we are paying a generous salary, very high commissions on all sales and you even get to keep your tips.
